What are, and were, casinos?
A casino is a building hosting certain types of gambling and activities involving games of chance. They are found in a numerous amount of locations ranging from online to areas combined with hotels, shopping, on ships, other tourist attractions and have even been discussed exclusively for airplanes. Some casinos, such as those in Las Vegas, are known for hosting live entertainment events, such as singers, comedy, concerts or other events.
Where does the term ”casino” come from?
Like all words “casino” as a term has gone through a metamorphosis of meaning. The term "Casino" originally meant a small summerhouse or villa built and meant for pleasure, so not that far from today’s meaning actually. However, in modern Italian, this term means a bordello, while the gambling house meaning is spelled casino with an accent. So, it’s pretty important if you’re looking for a gambling house in Italy to pronounce the word correctly.
One of the first known casinos was established in Venice around 1638. And during the 19th century, the term "casino" came to include other public buildings where pleasurable activities, including gambling, and sports took place.
Not all casinos were used for gaming. The Copenhagen Casino was a reputed Danish theatre and was also historically used in the 1848 revolution in Denmark, with the end result being the establishment of Denmark as a constitutional monarchy.
History of casinos as a place of gambling
The precise origin of gambling itself is unknown but we can almost certainly assume it to be almost as old as man himself. In fact, the first official account of the practice was recorded in China in 2300 B.C., but it is generally believed that the activity of gambling has been seen in almost every society in history. There are many stories and anecdotes from ancient and recent history where the game of chance plays a major role.
In American history, early casinos were originally known as saloons. It was in the saloons that weary and lonely travellers could find people to socialise with, talk to, drink with, and often gamble with. During the early 20th century in the USA, gambling became banned by state legislation and the social reformers of the time, along with alcohol in many parts. However, in 1931, gambling was legalized throughout the state of Nevada and America's first official casinos were born in the infamous city of Las Vegas.
Today’s casinos
From then casinos have gone from strength to strength, not just in the US but in many other parts of the world also. And the explosion of opportunities to play and gamble online have also contributed to the spread of
casinos without the feel of the green felt, but with just as much if not more of the excitement casinos are so well-known for.
